Democracy did not bring Zardari to the presidency. A back door deal between Musharraf and Dick Cheney did. Pakistani people were not consulted on the NRO, without which there would be no Zardari in the big house.

Sure, elections and other democratic looking things were waived in the air, as they were when Mr Musharraf, Mubarak or Kaddafi were "electe".

An excellent piece Kyla. Democracy produces the weirdest result sometimes but, if the process of democracy is allowed to flourish, the system corrects itself and you end up with a far better system than we have in the laregly autocratic Muslim world. I must say that Musharraf dealt with it all with a sense of honour in the end. He did not try to hang on to power at all costs, and that is something that is terribly rare in our Muslim world. So I hope Pakistan will shine a little light for the rest of the region, even though Democracy's current champion in Pakistan is almost as bad as the one in Washington!
