Podcast Showcase: Feminist Book Club

Podcast

Welcome to our series of Podcast Showcases, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This week, we feature Feminist Book Club.

Sum up your podcast in three sentences

Feminist Book Club: The Podcast is a weekly show that celebrates all things feminism and literature through conversations with authors, writers, and readers. We take an intersectional approach and seek to amplify debut writers of color first and foremost. To demonstrate the breadth of feminisms, we ask each guest to share their own definition of feminism and what it means to them to be feminist.

Who is your ideal listener? Who loves your show?

Our ideal listeners are book lovers who believe that reading can be an act of resistance.

What made you start this podcast?

I started my business, Feminist Book Club, in July of 2018 while I was still doing a different podcast. That show was winding down and I was pretty disenchanted with it, so I decided to start fresh with Feminist Book Club: The Podcast to align all of my work with the Feminist Book Club brand. Because the Feminist Book Club subscription box features only one book a month, I wanted a way to showcase all of the incredible feminist writing that’s out there.

What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?

Because I want to highlight a vast array of literature, I’ve had on all different kinds of feminist authors. I always read the books that our guests have written, so that means I’ve read way outside my comfort zone. I typically prefer memoir, short stories, or immersive literary fiction, but I’ve learned to love genres and writing styles of all kinds.

What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?

I’ve been podcasting for three years and absolutely love this medium. I’ve taught podcasting workshops and generally love to advocate for this form of communication. However, I find the editing process so tedious. In late 2019, I hired a brilliant podcast editor to help with that aspect. So now it’s a joy again!

If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?

There are a few good ones, depending on your reading tastes. If you’re a fan of short stories, you can’t go wrong with the episode with Kali Fajardo-Anstine, author of SABRINA & CORINA. For a great discussion about race and the publishing industry, the episode with Mira Jacob, author of GOOD TALK, is excellent. Finally, for a spoiler-free dive into one of the most popular books of 2019, I’d recommend the episode with Angie Kim, author of MIRACLE CREEK.

Which other podcasts do you love listening to?

I’m a huge fan of Get BookedThe Guilty FeministFamily Secrets, and Unladylike. Honestly, I’m currently wearing an Unladylike t-shirt!
