Podcast Showcase: In Bad Taste

Podcast

Welcome to the next in the Podcast Showcase series, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This time, we talk to In Bad Taste.

1. Sum up your podcast in three sentences

Nutritionist Pixie Turner and cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Nikki Stamp are casting a critical eye over health documentaries, so you don’t have to watch them.

These documentaries are becoming ever more popular, but they’re full of misinformation. After listening to this podcast, you’ll be better off than if you’d watched these propaganda movies.

2. Who is your ideal listener? Who loves your show?

Our ideal listener is anyone who is confused or fed up about the mixed messages in these health documentaries, but isn’t sure where to start in dissecting them. We’ve also heard from many people who find they’re able to argue with family members more easily now too!

3. What made you start this podcast?

Anger! Anger and frustration at the amounts of misinformation being spread so easily to millions of people. People regularly ask us for our thoughts on these movies, so a podcast felt like a great way to give long-form answers to lots of people, rather than having to answer each person individually.

4. What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?

We’ve learnt more about why people fall for misinformation and why these movies are so compelling.

5. What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?

It’s hard work! People think we just rock up to our microphones and press record, but we spend hours and hours watching these movies, making pages of notes, and creating a plan before we even sit down and start recording our thoughts. Editing also takes longer than you think! But the finished product is worth it.

6. If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?

We’d recommend starting with the documentary they hate the most, or the one they saw most recently. For a lot of people, that’s likely going to be (Un)Well.

7. Which other podcasts do you love listening to?

So many! We love listening to podcasts that are funny and informative and don’t discuss health – it’s a bit of escapism.
