Where the world thinks out loud

Podcast Showcase: Better Known

Condenser microphone in a studio

Welcome to the next in the Podcast Showcase series, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This time, we talk to Better Known

Sum up your podcast in three sentences

A guest selects six things which should be better known. They can select anything – people, places, objects, stories, experiences – which they love and think deserve more recognition. The listener gets lots of great recommendations and a nagging sense that the good things in life sometimes get unjustly forgotten.

What made you start this podcast?

There are lots of interviews where guests amiably talk through the details of their life. I thought it would be much more revealing of who they are – and much more fun – if they talked about their overlooked passions.

What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?

Alexei Sayle talked about the film Predator 2, Joanne Harris spoke about the Rollright Stones, Jim al-Khalili discussed Gertrude Bell – every episode has taught me something surprising.

What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?

It has been a brilliant opportunity to chat to some hugely interesting and entertaining people. My principle has been to ask people questions they are not normally asked, which makes them very engaging and to edit each episode to half an hour so we are all as focused and on point as possible.

If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?

The episode with Matthew Parris – it ranges from the British misconduct during the Boer War through to how to empty a bottle of ketchup

Which other podcasts do you love listening to?

The Forum on BBC World Service, Hard Talk with Stephen Sackur and Zeinab Badawai
