Where the world thinks out loud

Podcast Showcase: Internal Comms Pro

Headphones

Welcome to the next in the Podcast Showcase series, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This time, we talk to Internal Comms Pro.

Sum up your podcast in three sentences

Internal Comms Pro: The Podcast is designed to take internal communicators to the next level. Whether the listener is new or a veteran to the internal comms world, our podcast meets them where they are. Our thoughtfully produced conversations connect the dots to our listeners’ undeniable worth.

Who is your ideal listener? Who loves your show?

The ideal listener is higher ups within their respective companies, but we’ve found that we also appeal to various company levels in work fields of internal communication, executive communication, and human resources.

What made you start this podcast?

The creation of the podcast came with the creation of the ICPro brand as a whole. We found that there was a lot of helpful material for internal communicators, but there wasn’t a hub that gathered all of those resources.

The podcast in particular was designed to talk to the experts on particular IC topics, and hopefully help internal communicators realize that they aren’t the only ones dealing with certain issues and that there are others willing to talk about it.

What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?

I’ve personally learned a lot! I initially came on as an intern interested in audio editing. As roles switched around and I was given more control over the podcast, I realized I needed to dive into our subject matter more.

To be brief, the biggest learning for me is just how important internal communications are. It’s one of those fields that you’d know nothing about if you didn’t work in a company that required it, but once you do, you realize just how much internal communicators have to do for employees.

What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?

I personally discovered my love of podcasting and audio editing when I was in college. I grew up on podcasts and audio dramas, and was lucky enough to have the chance to make some of my own throughout my schooling. Coming onto the Internal Comms Pro Team, they’ve been incredibly supportive in my growth and have let me figure things out on my own.

My favorite part of the podcasting progress is honestly the end result. We’ve had multiple guests come on claiming they aren’t great behind the mic, then once they hear the final product their minds are blown. They tend to think I worked some “audio magic” but I believe our guests bring value to our show; I just help clean it up a little bit.

While I don’t necessarily “hate” this part, the toughest part for me is keeping track of all the moving pieces. This season is the first time I’ve been promoted to a producer, and I’m seeing how important time management is when it comes to dealing with multiple guests. Luckily I’m learning along the way!

If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?

I would personally recommend the first episode of our fifth season: The Professional and Personal Change Journey that Hit Home. The podcast went under new leadership a couple seasons before this one, but I feel that season 5 is where we really hit our stride with the flow of our episodes. This along with other season 5 episodes were made during Covid and still have relevant information to questions people may be asking.

Which other podcasts do you love listening to?

There are dozens of other great internal communications podcasts that I like to listen to every now and then, “ICology” is one that pops in my mind. When I need something to play in the background when I’m working, I go to “My Brother, My Brother, and Me” by the McElroy brothers. It’s a great show if you’re looking for a laugh!

If people want to find you online, where can they do so?
