The Best TV and Streaming Premieres: June 2023

After a May with powerful titles such as Netflix’s Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, the long-awaited return of Max’s irreverent comedy The Other Two, and the premiere of the spy series FUBAR starring Arnold Schwarzenegger; the month of June also promises to keep up with great things to watch.

The coming weeks will see new seasons of bold, established series such as The Bear, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and The Witcher. In addition, outstanding releases such as: HBO’s The Idol, and Disney +’s Secret Invasion will be available.

Here are the series to keep an eye on in June:

The Idol

HBO | Season 1 | Release date: Sunday, June 04

Lily-Rose Depp will play a pop star as The Weeknd transforms into a cult leader in the upcoming HBO series.

Created for television by Sam Levinson, Abel Tesfaye (The Weeknd) and Reza Fahim, The Idol tells the story of a self-help guru who enters into a complicated romantic relationship with a rising singer. The show’s plot has been described as “the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood.”

In this vein, the show centers on Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp), a pop singer who suffers a nervous breakdown that derails her latest tour. After being the subject of “brutal” press coverage, The Idol star decides to reinvent herself as America’s sexiest pop star. Her passion is reignited when she begins an affair with Tedros, an enigmatic man who turns out to be the leader of a cult. The pair soon strike up a toxic relationship that could destroy them both.

The Idol will debut on June 4 and will air in the Sunday night slot that is reserved for HBO premium content such as House of Dragon, Succession, Euphoria and The Last of Us.

Levinson, The Weeknd and Fahim are executive producing the series alongside Joseph Epstein, Ashley Levinson, Aaron L. Gilbert and Kevin Turen. The show promises to be a gritty and brutal look at the music industry.

After a stellar season, fans and critics have been waiting to see what’s next for Captain Pike and his intergalactic crew. Luckily, we won’t have to wait too much longer.

The first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was a masterpiece that combined nostalgic elements of Star Trek: The Original Series and modern techniques. Importantly, the show acts as a prequel to the original series, taking place seven years before Kirk and Spock first meet. It is also a sequel to Star Trek: Discovery, with some of the same characters.

In the show, the Enterprise is on a five-year mission focused on exploring strange new worlds, searching for new life forms and new civilizations, and boldly going where no one has gone before.

Most of the cast from the previous season returns, which was to be expected given the state the first installment was left in. The full list of main cast members includes Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, Rebecca Romijn, among others.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was created by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet. Henry Alonso Myers and Akiva Goldsman are the showrunners for the season.

Secret Invasion

Disney + | Season 1 | Release date: Wednesday, June 21

As part of Phase 5 of the MCU, Disney+ continues the story of Nick Fury and the Skrull Talos, who already appeared together in the Captain Marvel movie. The show will be based on the comic book series of the same name and promises a heavy dose of sci-fi and suspense.

The trailer gives the impression of an espionage thriller, in which Fury must defend the planet from the Skrulls, dangerous aliens with shape-shifting abilities.

Secret Invasion takes place during The Blip, the five-year time span after Thanos’ snap. With this story, the MCU complicates the Talos storyline, introducing the rebel Skrulls who secretly plot against Earth’s heroes.

Samuel L. Jackson reprises his role as Nick Fury. Jackson is joined by actors Ben Mendelsohn, Cobie Smulders, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, Martin Freeman and Don Cheadle.

The Bear

Hulu | Season 2 | Release date: Thursday, June 22

Hulu series The Bear got a lot of buzz when it premiered, and it wasn’t long before that attention led to the series being renewed for season two.

The series explores the food industry through the lens of a talented chef named Carmy Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White), who returns to Chicago to run the family restaurant after the unexpected death of his older brother, Michael (Jon Bernthal).

The Bear shows Carmy’s attempts to help the sandwich shop thrive while dealing with his own grief over his brother’s suicide.

In a recent interview, co-showrunner Joanna Calo commented that the new season will focus on hospitality, caring for others and making the cast’s lives a little bigger. In the background, Carmy will continue to reel from the death of his brother and his own demons.

The series has received major nominations at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards and Critics Choice Awards. Hulu announced in May 2023 that the full second season would premiere on June 22, 2023.

And Just Like That

Max | Season 2 | Release date: Thursday, June 22

Carrie Bradshaw and the girls are back together for the second season of And Just Like That, HBO Max’s revival of Sex and the City.

Michael Patrick King’s controversial series reunites Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis. Even after six seasons and two movies, fans are still eager to learn more about Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte’s complicated life and friendship.

As with the first season, the main plot points of the second season will be kept under wraps until the premiere. However, we suspect that Charlotte’s storylines with her children, Miranda and Che, and Carrie’s reinvention will be deepened.

The mantra for this season can be pretty perfectly summed up by Carrie’s opening narration. “If you’re lucky, no matter what life hands you, you can always count on your closest friends to be there.”

The second season will consist of 11 episodes and will premiere with two episodes on Thursday, June 22 on Max. The following nine episodes will air weekly on Thursdays throughout the summer.

The Witcher

Netflix | Season 3 | Release date: Thursday, June 29

Henry Cavill’s final season as Geralt will be broadcast in two installments.

The Witcher is a Netflix fantasy series based on the books by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski. The show follows Geralt of Rivia, who is part of a group of magically enhanced monster hunters known as “Witchers”.

The show will return to Netflix on June 29, 2023, with five new episodes. The season will be split into two parts, with the second volume premiering on July 27, 2023. Similar to Stranger Things 4, The Witcher opts to have two halves compared to its previous seasons.

So far, the plot of the third season has not been fully confirmed. However, it is quite likely that it will focus on Ciri’s path, given that the girl is currently being pursued by almost every character in the story.

This will be the last season starring Henry Cavill as Geralt. The actor has left the series due to creative differences and will be replaced by Liam Hemsworth for the fourth season.
