Mike Flanagan’s terrifying universe continues to expand. The Midnight Club is a streaming horror and mystery series created by Mike Flanagan and Leah Fong. Flanagan, on his part, has previously been involved in hit supernatural shows, such as The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor and Midnight Mass.

The series is an adaptation of Christopher Pike’s 1994 novel of the same name. The Midnight Club follows a group of terminally ill young people who reside at the Rotterdam Home hospice. The teens share an affinity for spooky stories and meet regularly at midnight to tell such tales. Eventually, they decide to make a peculiar pact: the first of them to succumb to their illness will have to communicate from beyond the grave. As expected, after the death of one of the club members, strange and inexplicable things begin to happen at the hospice.

The Midnight Club bears certain similarities to the popular Nickelodeon show, Are You Afraid of the Dark? However, The Midnight Club has a much deeper and darker concept. And the fact is that, faced with the prospect of their own death, the show’s protagonists will do their best to find proof that there is life after the physical transition.

The Midnight Club stars Iman Benson, Adia, Igby Rigney, Ruth Codd, Aya Furukawa, Annarah Shephard, William Chris Sumpter and Sauriyan Sapkota.

Cabinet of Curiosities

Netflix | Season 1 | Release date: Tuesday, October 25, 2022

Award-winning Mexican director Guillermo del Toro in partnership with streaming service Netflix has developed an episodic horror anthology titled Cabinet of Curiosities. The anthology features a narrative structure of independent and self-conclusive tales. It is a series of stories that work on their own, but have a common connection, in this case, the spirit of the spooky and macabre.

According to the official synopsis, these sinister stories range “from the magical to the macabre, from the gothic to the grotesque or are just plain creepy”. The Mexican, known especially for his unusual and terrifying films such as Hellboy (2004), Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), and The Shape of Water (2017) has explained that the Cabinet of Curiosities show has been conceived to break with the traditional idea of horror.

Emily Carroll, Michael Shea, H.P. Lovecraft, Henry Kuttner and Guillermo del Toro head the list of writers who have collaborated with the anthology. It should be noted that the Netflix series is made up of eight episodes, each of which will last approximately 90 minutes.

“Each of the episodes has a whole world. They present you with different delights; some are savory, some are sweet. You get a surprise from each of the bites”, says the filmmaker in the official trailer.

Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities is perhaps the Oscar-winning director’s most ambitious project and also his most extravagant. Unlike most Netflix releases, Cabinet of Curiosities will premiere over the course of four days. Beginning October 25, two episodes will be streamed each day.
