Welcome to the next in the Podcast Showcase series, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This time, we talk to Profoundly Pointless.
Sum up your podcast in three sentences
Profoundly Pointless is something different every time. From Sex Toy Designers and UFO Investigators to Penguin Researchers, Olympic Racewalkers and Social Media Algorithm Engineers, we like to tell stories you don’t usually hear about. Our goal is to explore a different side of life and learn something new in every episode.
Who is your ideal listener? Who loves your show?
Our ideal listener is anyone who’s curious. We explore a lot of different topics and I think that what our listeners enjoy most is being exposed to something they’ve never heard of or always wondered about. It opens up a whole new world.
What made you start this podcast?
Curiosity and boredom. I’ve always been curious about people’s lives and I got tired of hearing the same interviews about the same things with the same people. I’m also a big list person, so the segment of the show where we rank things like “the best kinds of cheese” or “favorite fictional dogs” is always interesting. Plus in a weird way, it really really tells you a lot about someone that traditional questions would never do.
What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?
I think the biggest thing I’ve learned is how the story you usually hear and the real story are almost always so different. What goes into an athlete’s training, a dominatrix’s business plan or a neuroscientist’s research is often not what I previously thought.
What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?
I’ve loved it. Even when only a handful of people listened, I still really enjoyed the creative process of telling new stories. Podcasting opens up so many new options. I don’t, however, enjoy some aspects of editing. I’m always worried I’m gonna mess up the audio.
If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?
I think you can start anywhere. Scroll down and find one that jumps out at you or just pick one and go. I think once you see how interesting some of these people are and what you can learn about yourself from them, you’ll be excited to try something new. Don’t listen to the first one though, it’s sooooo bad.
Which other podcasts do you love listening to?
The Daily and the Watchers on the Wall podcast right now because I’m rewatching Game of Thrones hoping the ending changes by the time I’m done.
