Mentiras, la Serie (2025)
Director: Gabriel Ripstein
Country: México
Mentiras, la Serie (Mentiras, The Series) is an endearing television series inspired by the acclaimed Mexican musical by José Manuel López Velarde, created in 2009. If you are curious or nostalgic about the Latin culture of the eighties, you will surely love this eight-episode adaptation that, within days of its premiere, became the most watched production in the history of Amazon Prime Video Mexico.
Set in “the land of tequila and mariachis” in the 1980s, Mentiras, la Serie tells the story of Daniela (Belinda), Dulce (Diana Bovio), Yuri (Regina Blandón), and Lupita (Mariana Treviño), whose lives become intertwined at the funeral of the inveterate liar, Emmanuel Mijares (Luis Gerardo Méndez), just when they learn that they all had a long-term romantic relationship with him.
To make matters worse, Daniela, Dulce, Yuri, and Lupita are the main suspects in his death.
Gabriel Ripstein’s musical series follows the female quartet as they investigate Emmanuel’s life and suspicious demise. As you might imagine, the situation between the women gets heated. But as the plot progresses, each of them begins a process of introspection that changes them forever.
Ripstein and his team are good at transferring the theatrical scheme to an episodic audiovisual language. They never transgress the core elements of the play, nor do they squander the inherent strengths of the television format.
With a handful of great ballads and top-notch performers, this television adaptation pays a respectful and joyful tribute to one of Latin America’s most iconic musicals.
Reina Roja (2024)
Directors: Koldo Serra, Julián de Tavira
Country: Spain
Created and written by Amaya Muruzábal and Salvador Perpiñá, Prime Video’s Reina Roja (Red Queen) adapts the novel of the same name by Juan Gómez-Jurado, which was the best-selling novel in Spain in 2020 and 2021. Let us remember that, Reina Roja kicked off an acclaimed trilogy completed by the titles Loba Negra (Black Wolf) and Rey Blanco (White King).
Reina Roja tells the story of Antonia Scott (Vicky Luengo), “the smartest person in the world,” who is recruited for a secret police project following the disappearance and murder of the children of influential and powerful families. Antonia, with the help of Basque officer Jon Gutiérrez, embarks on an investigation to solve these crimes, discovering that they are connected and that someone is playing with them.
Meanwhile, the protagonist’s life is affected by a series of circumstances: her husband is in a coma and she has a conflictive relationship with her son. Reina Roja is a disturbing thriller, in which the city of Madrid is another protagonist, and which combines the urgency and action of the police investigation with the juicy chemistry of its two main characters.
The second season of Reina Roja, titled Loba Negra, is expected to premiere in the spring or summer of 2026.
Maxton Hall — Die Welt zwischen uns (2024)
Directors: Martin Schreier, Tarek Roehlinger
Country: Germany
Prime Video’s German series Maxton Hall – Die Welt zwischen uns (Maxton Hall-The World Between Us), captivated audiences almost instantly, topping the charts in more than 120 regions. Just one month after its release in May 2024, the teen romance was renewed for a second season, which will premiere on November 7.
Adapted from German author Mona Kasten’s Save Me, Save You and Save Us trilogy, the series is set at Maxton Hall, a prestigious boarding school in the UK, and centers on Ruby Bell (Harriet Herbig-Matten), a committed student who aspires to attend Oxford. As Ruby makes her way through the academic scene among her wealthy peers, she ends up entangled in an unlikely romance with James Beaufort (Damian Hardung), the spoiled heir to one of the most powerful families in the world.
The series explores an enemies-to-lovers romance set against the backdrop of wealth, privilege and secrets. Maxton Hall is full of teenage angst, but the romance is certainly worth it.
Cada Minuto Cuenta (2024)
Directors: Jorge Michel Grau, Moisés Ortiz Urquidi, Fernando Urdapilleta
Country: Mexico
Cada Minuto Cuenta (Every Minute Counts) is a Mexican drama series that recounts the events of the 1985 earthquake in Mexico City. The Prime Video offering not only tells the story of the earthquake and the panic it unleashed, but also speaks of the people and their humanity, of unity in the face of tragedy, of strength, and of the struggle to survive and move forward.
Comprising 10 episodes, Cada Minuto Cuenta focuses on the moment of the disaster, following several key characters, including a doctor desperate to help, a group of nurses trapped in the ruins of their hospital, a mother struggling to reach her children, an ambitious aspiring journalist, and other ordinary people who show us what it was like to experience the earthquake and how they lived through the hours after the event.
The raw drama presents heroism and corruption in equal measure. On the one hand, it highlights solidarity, courage, and community strength in the face of adversity. On the other, it addresses government corruption, systemic deficiencies, and the crucial role of the media.
If you’re looking for a well-produced historical drama, you’ll find it here. Fair warning: viewers, especially those who remember the event, may find it triggering or difficult to watch.
Den Som Dræber (2019)
Directors: Carsten Myllerup, Jonas Alexander Arnby, Goran Kapetanović
Country: Denmark
Den Som Dræber (Darkness: Those Who Kill) is a Danish crime thriller series that premiered in 2019.
It is a reboot of the original 2011 series Those Who Kill, which follows investigator Jan Michelsen (Kenneth M. Christensen) and profiler Louise Bergstein (Natalie Madueño) as they work together to solve a series of disturbing murders.
Known for its dark atmosphere and complex characters, Den Som Dræber explores the psychological aspects of crimes and the motivations of murderers, delving into the most unexpected corners of the human mind. The series has had several seasons, each focusing on a new case or a series of interrelated crimes.
If you like crime series with intricate plots and a focus on the darker side of human nature, Den Som Dræber is an international series that is definitely worth watching. Interestingly, in 2014, Fox produced an American adaptation of Den Som Dræber, set in Pittsburgh.
