It’s great that you want to contribute to Global Comment, and we welcome pitches from people at all levels of experience from all over the world. Our goal is to start conversations and promote diverse writers.
We strive to publish a variety of ‘takes’ on this site, but we do have a strong view as to what is and isn’t acceptable discourse. We lean towards progressive voices and oppose populism; if you read the existing writing on the site, you will probably have a good idea of whether or not your work is right for us. If you aren’t sure, ask!
What we are looking for
Global Comment showcases independent journalists from around the world. With a focus on writing about arts, culture and creativity, we talk about events, society and history through an arts and culture lens.
But we’re not talking about stuffy and pretentious takes on arts and culture that readers can’t relate to. We want to talk about things like:
- – what your local food scene tells us about your city
- – which young adult books every queer teen should read
- – why you believe everyone should ignore Pride and Prejudice because Jane Austen’s best book is actually [insert your fave here]
- – what the street art in Gaza tells us about Palestinian resistance
- – which six under-rated podcasts every film fan should be listening to
- – which artists every feminist should be following on Instagram…
We only publish original work that hasn’t been published in any form elsewhere, even on your own blog.
How to pitch Global Comment
Global Comment has six core verticals – Watch, Listen, Read, See, Taste, Place – and we publish stories from writers around the world that fit into one of these verticals.
Please read the guidelines for people who want to pitch articles to Global Comment below before getting in touch.
For many of our writers, English is a second language, and many of our writers also don’t have extensive experience as published writers. If this is your situation, you can still pitch us!
Provide us with a few sentences about what you’d like to write and the resources you want to draw upon and please provide clips, a blog, or other examples of your work. Give us a short bio to get to know you.
Tell us why you want to write about and why you are the person who should say what you have to say. Tell us why Global Comment is the best home for this piece. And tell us which vertical your story idea would fit into.
We prefer pitches to completed submissions, but we do accept both. If you’d like to send us a submission, please briefly introduce yourself and the piece and include your submission in the body of the email. If you’re going to do simultaneous pitches or submissions, please inform us beforehand.
Please read our pitching guidelines for full information on how to go about pitching Global Comment.
Now get thinking about what you’d like to submit. Surprise us. Make the ordinary extraordinary — or take on the extraordinary and put it in context. When you’re ready, get in touch.
