Welcome to the next in the Podcast Showcase series, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This time, we talk to Betty in the sky with a suitcase
Sum up your podcast in three sentences
Betty in the Sky with a Suitcase is a light-hearted podcast reminiscent of old-fashioned radio where story telling was an actual art form. I’m a flight attendant for a major US airline and I bring the listeners stories from the flight attendants and pilots and from traveling around the world.
The show features stories about what really happens on the airplane that regular passengers never see, the airplane is an odd microcosm of the larger world, so the stories can be weird, wacky and sometimes even sublime.
Who is your ideal listener? Who loves your show?
Strangely enough my listeners are as diverse as the flying public, they range from a BBC World News anchor to a thirteen year old girl. The show appeals to anyone who wants a good chuckle.
What made you start this podcast?
I started the podcast in 2005 before most people ever even heard the word “podcast.” I started it because it was exciting to be part of a new medium.
What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?
Because I ask flight attendants to tell me funny stories, I now have a bank of entertaining stories that are a hit at social events.
What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?
I like recording the podcast and the positive response I get, but I’m not crazy about the computer time involved with editing and posting. All the alone time involved with making the show is the exact opposite of adventure travel.
If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?
If someone wants to sample the podcast I point them to the 100th episode where I did a “best of Betty” which is a good overview of the style of the show.
Which other podcasts do you love listening to?
I listen to many podcasts such as The Adam Carolla Show, Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me, and Life is Short with Justin Long.
