Podcast Showcase: DumTeeDum

Podcast

Welcome to the next in the Podcast Showcase series, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This time, we talk to Dumteedum

Sum up your podcast in three sentences

Dumteedum is a fan-generated podcast about The Archers, which is the worlds longest-running soap opera.

Who is your ideal listener? Who loves your show?

Our ideal listener is a fan of The Archers. We presumed when starting the podcast that most of our listeners would be UK-based but the listenership is fairly spread throughout the world with maybe 50% of our listeners being UK-based and the rest split between the US, Canada Australia, New Zealand and the rest of the world.

What made you start this podcast?

I had already started to create podcasts, How Jamaica Conquered the World and Mid Atlantic, and it occurred to me that a fan podcast analysing the week’s going is on in The Archers was an obvious thing to do as at that time there were many podcasts discussing and dissecting TV shows like Game of Thrones for example.

What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?

I’ve learnt much more about the history and production history of the Archers by doing Dumteedum and I’ve got to meet quite a few of the actors now, as we have not only done shows where we’ve interviewed them but we’ve done live shows in front of an audience with them.

What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?

Producing Dumteedum is very different from, say, 10 American presidents, which is more of an audio documentary, so I have learnt different techniques. This show is much more personality and interview led as opposed to some of my other podcasts. It might sound trite but there is literally nothing that I dislike about the process of creating this show.

What I have also learnt is that there is an X factor between yourself and your other co-host, which cannot be easily defined. Quite simply, you either get on or you do not.

If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?

If they are a fan of The Archers, they really should start at an episode where there was a strong storyline that they liked. I wouldn’t recommend going back to episode one as we have produced over 350 of them now.

Which other podcasts do you love listening to?

I listen to many podcasts. Some of my favourites would be the Guardian football podcast, the history of England, the history of English, Lexicon Valley, and Hit Parade.
