Welcome to the next in the Podcast Showcase series, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This time, we talk to Feminist Visionaries.
Sum up your podcast in three sentences
The Feminist Visionaries podcast is all about connecting in a meaningful way and asking ourselves how can we do better and be better, how can we learn from our mistakes, how can we leverage our desire to make a difference in the lives of others through our businesses, and how can we use our time and financial freedom to create radical social change in our society. This podcast is a deep dive into the seen and unseen ways that patriarchy shows up in our lives and businesses so that we can smash through those barriers and create real, lasting, meaningful change in the world.
Who is your ideal listener? Who loves your show?
Feminist Visionaries’ ideal audience is womxn business owners who identify as feminists and visionaries and are driven by their business mission and values to use their businesses as a tool for creating social change, whether that’s through the actual work their business does or by creating more revenue and time to donate and volunteer.
What made you start this podcast?
I grew up with very conservative beliefs simply because I didn’t know any better and I didn’t ask any questions. So when I moved away from home and began to slowly change my views I was able to really see how valuable it was for me to have someone challenge me on my beliefs and point out my blind spots so that I could sit and think on why I believed what I did and did I want to believe something different.
That’s what I hope this podcast will do for others: give them the space and permission to question what they believe and decide if they want to believe differently.
What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?
So much. I start out every episode with a bit of history research on my topic because I love to learn and you don’t know what you don’t know, right?
I’ve learned a lot about how much our beliefs around how to do business are rooted in white supremacy, how intersectional feminism was a concept pioneered by Black women as far back as the late 1800s, and I’m always struck by how different things are, yet how very much the same.
What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love/hate about the process?
I actually love podcasting. I’m usually one to prefer to communicate in writing but being able to teach via the podcast and share things I love and am passionate about has been really fun. And I always outsource all the bits I don’t enjoy, like graphics design and editing.
If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?
My favorite episode is the one on toxic positivity called How Toxic Positivity Props Up White Supremacy. It’s one of the most downloaded episodes and I think it gives the perfect introduction into how insidious white supremacy is in our culture and is a great foundation of what we still have to unlearn in order to be good allies and create change.
Which other podcasts do you love listening to?
I really love true crime and astrology when it comes to podcasts as a listener. Two of my favorites are Glow Girl and Redhanded.
