Welcome to our series of Podcast Showcases, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This week, we feature Made of Human.
Sum up your podcast in three sentences
For anxious misfits.
Who is your ideal listener? Who loves your show?
My listeners are a bunch of introverted, feminist nerds. We all want to learn how to do better, in life. Especially in terms of social justice. It’s for people who want to feel less alone.
What made you start this podcast?
I found it really hard to be an adult. I saw so many people around me seemingly have everything under control. I wanted to ask them all HOW. How to be an adult? How to do life? So I started the podcast, as an excuse to ask them. Now, 180+ episodes in, it turns out, no one has any clue what they’re doing.
What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?
That we’re all so incredibly human. That the people we see every day and envy because they seem so on top of things, are quite possibly struggling with something too. That we all have more in common than what separates us. And that there’s a huge group of people needing these types of conversations.
What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?
I love love love love podcasting. I love that no one tells me what to do or how to do it. That I get to pick the guests. And I love to chat to them. Every time I have a conversation with someone, I feel so passionate about it. My least favourite bit is all the admin – emailing back and forth with people and finding a place to do the recording and dragging all my equipment around with me. I envy Marc Maron for having his garage be his studio.
If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?
God, that’s such a hard question. I’d say, it depends what you’re in the mood for. I think the first Susan Calman episodes, episodes 13 and 14 are probably the best ones to start out with. It was a classic Made of Human Podcast chat. We go really deep. Susan had, before the interview, clearly decided that she wasn’t going to hold back. We both cried. It was wonderful.
Which other podcasts do you love listening to?
I’m a huge fan of The Parapod – a podcast where a sceptic (Ian Boldsworth) and a believer (Barry Dodds) discuss ghosts and the paranormal. It’s the funniest podcast I’ve ever listened to. I must have heard the whole three seasons maybe 20 times. I also listen to Beyond the Bastards (essentially about evil people), All Killa No Filla and My Favorite Murder (UK and US true crime podcasts). I’m also a fan of She’s All Fat – two LA based comics talking about fat stuff.
