Podcast Showcase: Masala Podcast

Headphones

Welcome to the next in the Podcast Showcase series, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This time, we talk to Masala Podcast

Sum up your podcast in three sentences

Proudly feminist Masala Podcast is all about taboos in South Asian culture: everything from sex, sexuality, periods, menopause, porn, mental health, shame, sexual harassment and more. Featuring some of the world’s most powerful South Asian women, these Bad Betis (Bad Daughters) are talking about things we’re not “supposed” to talk about as South Asian women.

Who is your ideal listener? Who loves your show?

Masala Podcast
Masala Podcast

South Asian women (whether first, second or third gen) living in the UK, US, Canada and India. The podcast offers South Asian woman the space to be the women they want to be and still feel part of the culture and community. It introduces them to the experiences & voices of other inspiring South Asian women around the world, who are challenging existing South Asian patriarchal structures with their work.

What made you start this podcast?

My own life and personal experiences growing up in a traditional family in India, I had to battle for decades to have freedom and the right to make my own choices about my life.

What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?

I’ve learnt that when we hear the experiences of others and they mirror ours, we feel less alone. I’ve also learnt that it doesn’t matter whether you live a cosmopolitan life in London or a traditional life in an Indian town – South Asian women still struggle with the same issues to do with patriarchal cultural structures.

What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?

I love really hearing the authentic experiences & journeys of other South Asian women. I love hearing from my many listeners about how Masala Podcast has helped them in their life’s journey. I dislike the process of trying to get people to find and listen to the podcast.

If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?

I’d recommend my interview with a South Asian porn star, it’s a fun and easy listen – while still pointing to issues within the community re: our sexuality.

Which other podcasts do you love listening to?

I love Esther Perel’s “Where do we begin” as well as Dr. Rangan Chatterjee’s “Feel Better Live More”.

If people want to find you online, where can they do so?
