Welcome to the next in the Podcast Showcase series, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This time, we talk to Nocturne.
Sum up your podcast in three sentences
Nocturne is a storytelling podcast that explores the night, and how thoughts, feelings and behaviors transform in the dark. The show is interview-based and sound rich.
Who is your ideal listener? Who loves your show?
The ideal listener is someone who likes to settle down and immerse themselves into a personal, atmospheric story. Someone who is excited to learn about the inner workings of other people, and is curious about the world around them, particularly hidden or less visible aspects of the world.
What made you start this podcast?
Not being a natural night owl, I have always been curious and fascinated with the night, and how the world changes in the dark.
I love the different emotions that emerge around darkness – contemplation, trepidation, excitement… The night is imbued with mystery and layers of meaning. The relative stillness, and the darkness and shadows, give access to an entirely different realm of experience.
What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?
SO much! It would take forever to name them all. The biggest realization I’ve come to is how the night is an analog for wildness, and how wildness is an increasingly rare and threatened thing. It’s also precious.
What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?
I love podcasting because of the freedom of creating art that I’m moved to create, and also the connection to listeners all around the world. I wish it wasn’t being eaten up by large companies trying to make lots of money.
If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?
Each episode is pretty different. I think some standouts are: A Whole Night for the Future, 86 Days, Rest for Them, Elk River Road, Tree People, Shortboard, A Catalogue of Nights, I Was Flying, (This is Not) a Love Song.
Which other podcasts do you love listening to?
I love BBC’s Short Cuts, Freakonomics, Have You Heard George’s Podcast, Richard’s Famous Food Podcast, Rumble Strip, and Home of the Brave.
If people want to find you online, where can they do so?
