Podcast Showcase: Preconceived

Headphones

Welcome to the next in the Podcast Showcase series, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This time, we talk to Preconceived.

Sum up your podcast in three sentences

The goal of Preconceived is to challenge the preconceptions that shape how we view the world and the paradigms by which we live our lives. Episodes are diverse and have covered themes related to relationships, politics, medicine, philosophy and other aspects of society and culture. The podcast examines both our approach to major life choices, and also our perspectives on topics to which we may have been overly conditioned towards certain opinions.

Who is your ideal listener? Who loves your show?

Because our episodes are so diverse, there is a topic for everyone. Our audience is also quite diverse and spans a wide age range and has equal male and female listenership. Having said that, our most common age demographic is between 25-45.

What made you start this podcast?

The concept of “Preconceived” resonated with me as I have navigated my way through life.

There are so many embedded societal expectations that most of us follow, including myself. I wanted to challenge the notion that a typical life should include a standard education, a monogamous relationship, a 9-5 job, having kids, and then retiring when older.

While this aforementioned path may be the life one subscribes to, it should be a conscious choice, not a foregone conclusion.

What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?

Einstein once said, “It is harder to crack prejudice than an atom”. The same applies to preconceptions.

Despite the awareness that many of us have regarding our preconceptions, and the efforts we make to shed those preconceptions, it is still very challenging for most people, including myself, to “un-condition” ourselves from certain opinions and perspectives.

What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?

Podcasting can be a lot of work, but I find the more interested I am in the particular topic, the more work I want to put into it in order to produce the best possible episode.

I enjoy researching the topics and editing the episodes, but above all, I love speaking to the interesting guests and having them open my eyes to new opinions I never would have considered.

If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?

The episode “Circumcision” is one of my favorites. It was one of the earlier episodes we did, so the production value isn’t as high as our current episodes, but it epitomizes what the show is about.

Circumcision is one of those normal aspects of life to which we are so indoctrinated that most of us don’t even stop to think about whether it is normal. Our preconception that “circumcision is normal” is so strong that most of us have never stopped to truly reflect on the practice.

These are my favorite types of episodes – the ones about seemingly simple topics that are much more complex when you start digging deeper.

Which other podcasts do you love listening to?

I love history podcasts and revel in the episodes I get to do with historians. Some of my favorite history podcasts are Real Dictators and A Short History Of. The Happiness Lab is another of my favorites.
