Welcome to the next in the Podcast Showcase series, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This time, we talk to Salty Sex Cast.
Sum up your podcast in three sentences
This is the podcast you tune into when you want to reach your optimal level of sexual wellness. Whether you consider yourself a seasoned sexpert or have a hard time even saying the word ‘sex’ out loud, we have a message you want to hear.
We are committed to bringing fun, entertaining, and accurate conversations around sex, sexuality, relationships, and intimacy that help minimize fear, stigma, and false information around those topics.
Who is your ideal listener? Who loves your show?
Many of our listeners are adults who find they want to continue to improve their sexual wellness. Many of them are in committed relationships, and some are trying to heal from negative messages of sex and sexuality.
What made you start this podcast?
I’m a Nationally Board Certified Health and Wellness coach who specializes in body image. I noticed many of my clients wanted to talk about why body image was important to them but would freeze up or didn’t know how to talk about sex or their sexuality in a comfortable manner.
Many of them held a lot of shame and would disconnect when being intimate with themselves or with a partner.
I’ve learned there are so many ways to love and be loved, and to physically connect with yourself and others.
I wanted to have a trustworthy resource to send my clients to that affirmed they could be sexy no matter their body size, how to heal from harmful messages around sex, and how to love themselves fully.
I knew I had the passion and the drive to make something that I was looking for, but I had zero knowledge about podcasting before I started one!
What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?
I’ve healed so much from my sexual trauma and shame-ridden upbringing. Being able to have safe conversations around sex and sexuality really goes a long way.
I’ve learned there are so many ways to love and be loved, and to physically connect with yourself and others. I’ve had so many wonderful discoveries about myself from conversations with guests. I’ve also learned many people do not have access to quality, shame-free sex education.
What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?
There is so much to learn about recording, editing, posting, and marketing. For my first episode, my friend and I literally hit record on an iPad, huddled around a single mic and posted directly afterward. I didn’t even know what kind of mic to use and we used her son’s gaming mic! It can feel daunting at first when you’re so new to something, but I just focus on one thing to improve at a time.
The most uncomfortable part of the entire podcasting process is keeping things fun and relevant on social media without getting banned for sexual content
Anyone who has been podcasting for some time will say staying consistent is a challenge in itself. I will try to cluster record a few episodes so I always have an episode or two in reserve for those weeks that get crazy so I can stay on a weekly episode schedule. The most uncomfortable part of the entire podcasting process is keeping things fun and relevant on social media without getting banned for sexual content. Some podcasts have hundreds of thousands of social media followers, but their actual show content is not very good. Other podcasts have amazing messages with quality guests and topics, but find it difficult to get noticed without dedicating twice the effort into social media.
The best part of podcasting is getting to connect with so many experts in the field. I get to sit down and have amazing conversations with folks who have similar missions to mine. My training as a coach has taken me very far in being able to interview others and keep the conversation going. I usually struggle to not want to go on for hours!
If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?
A great starting episode is episode 93: Just Me, Myself, and I. This episode is my first monologue episode and I go into detail why I started the podcast, what I learned from the podcasting experience, and what I hope folks get from the messages shared on the show. You also get to know me and my personality 🙂
