Welcome to the next in the Podcast Showcase series, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This time, we talk to Science Adventure Stories For Kids.
Sum up your podcast in three sentences
Amazing audio adventures for the whole family hosted by Simon, the one and only Fact Finding Frog!
Every episode is totally full of true facts, excellent sound effects, cool music, and Simon’s jokes.
100% independently and privately produced, researched, recorded mixed and funded in Australia by me alone, Neil MacKinnon.
Who is your ideal listener? Who loves your show?
Children aged between 4 and 84, seriously, the parents seem to enjoy listening too!
What made you start this podcast?
It’s the type of show I would have liked to listen to when I was young. I felt there weren’t enough podcasts that didn’t speak condescendingly to kids.
My background has always been in entertainment with a personal fascination for recording and sound.
The technological advances over the last few years have made it possible to produce shows from a home studio to rival the best in the world.
What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?
I couldn’t begin to list the things I’ve learned by doing the research for this show!
One thing I have learned though is that people respond positively to well-produced, high-quality audio.
It has also surprised me how often kids will relisten to the episodes. I get feedback that they are often used as a bedtime story and the same ones are played over and over again.
What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?
I love creating an audio world that didn’t exist before, it feels a bit magical having something start off as a concept in my mind and then become a show people listen to.
Like every other podcaster though, the writing of the episodes can be a huge challenge. Researching each topic is always fun, but when it comes to sitting down and turning it into an entertaining script, that’s the hard bit.
If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?
Simon’s Earth Evolution parts 1 and 2 would be a perfect introduction to the style of the show, its production values, the level of educational material and the kind of humour to expect.
Which other podcasts do you love listening to?
I’m a big fan of Twenty Thousand Hertz and You Must Remember This. Ologies is also fantastic.
If people want to find you online, where can they do so?
