Podcast Showcase: The Industry

Welcome to the next in the Podcast Showcase series, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This time, we talk to The Industry

Sum up your podcast in three sentences

I can do it one sentence! A narrative non-fiction podcast that examines overlooked film history.

Who is your ideal listener? Who loves your show?

Anyone interested in movies really. You do not need to be some major film buff to get into it.

The stories of certain movies and the crazy production stories of why they failed or why certain trends happened can be enjoyed by anyone who likes movies.

What made you start this podcast?

I love narrative non-fiction podcasts. It’s my favorite type of show and I listen to them all the time and I wanted to see if I could make one.

For a while I was really enamored with the sound of Radiolab. I was thinking could I make something like that? The answer to that question is NO, by the way. However, I could make a narrative non-fiction series.

I also love film history, so it’s the whole idea of ‘write what you know’. Or podcast what you know.

What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?

Tons! One thing I can say is that typically that when I start an episode I have one particular topic but the focus changes as I dig into it. I might start out focusing on one movie or one aspect of the industry and the more I read about the topic the more the episode focus might shift. It happens all the time.

What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?

I love completing episodes! I love the edit! I love pretty much the entire process.

Except for the writing. Not fond about that.

Also actually finding the people and convincing them to talk to me about something they might not want to revisit is also not great.

I have some episodes that I haven’t finished because I don’t have enough information or I haven’t found the right guest or I have found the right guest but they’re not talking to me.

If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?

The Industry is an episodic podcast, so you can really jump in anywhere. Find a title that sounds interesting.

The fifth season has started so you can sample the latest ones. Start with The Lost Picture Show.

Which other podcasts do you love listening to?

Decoder Ring, One Year, Crooked City, Revisionist History, Search Engine, Endless Thread, Trailer Park, and Radiolab
