Podcast Showcase: The Podcast Accelerator

Headphones

Welcome to the next in the Podcast Showcase series, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This time, we talk to The Podcast Accelerator.

Sum up your podcast in three sentences

Helping busy podcasters to grow their show in specific, actionable ways.

Who is your ideal listener? Who loves your show?

The busy podcaster or podcast enthusiast looking to grow their own audience via podcasting. They know they love their subject matter, but don’t know how or what to do to grow their show every day – they know they want more listeners, but they don’t know how to get them.

What made you start this podcast?

I’ve been podcasting since 2013 and have produced over 1,100 episodes. I also run Captivate.fm, the UK podcast hosting & analytics platform so bringing the two together I noted that so many people asked me for advice on how to grow their show, that I’d better serve them by producing a show that is dedicated to that very thing.

What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?

Well, I work in podcasting every single day so I’m in a pretty unique position that I learn from “work” and can put all of that learning into the show to help others.

There’s so much going on in podcasting every day that lessons never stop – but if was to analyse one thing that I have learned, it’s that podcasters aren’t scared of the hard work needed to grow an audience, they just need the path laid out for them a little more clearly.

What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?

I’ve been lucky enough to build tools to get me past the things I hate! I used to hate how cumbersome the hosting and distribution process was, so we built Captivate.fm to make it easier. I’m not a huge fan of the editing process unless I’m in a really good mood, though. That takes a while and I tend to run my first edit in Descript just to make things a little easier.

As for what I love, it’s the people. I’ve been speaking at podcasting conferences all over the world since 2014 and from day one, the community opened their arms to me and continues to do so for other people entering the space. There’s not an industry like it for that community spirit.

If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?

The trailer! Get a feel for me, my style and my tone and you’ll get a sense of what I do and more pertinently, how I do it.

Which other podcasts do you love listening to?

Why Are Dad is a recent favourite of mine, but also Lore by Aaron Mahnke and First Action Bureau by the Gerry Anderson team.
