Welcome to the next in the Podcast Showcase series, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This time, we talk to Unlearning.
Sum up your podcast in three sentences
Adulthood has been about unlearning toxic behaviors and beliefs. This podcast is dedicated to all the things you had to unlearn in order to become the better person you desire to be.
Phylicia McLeod & Matt Sadler deep dive into personal stories provided by listeners or themselves and explore how far they have come on their journeys.
Who is your ideal listener? Who loves your show?
We are both comedians but our ideal listener is someone who is on their journey of unlearning unhealthy behaviors. We have received a lot of positive reviews from people who are open to their own self-reflection.
What made you start this podcast?
While growing up, I was taught that I needed to conform in order to be successful. I needed to relax my hair to be professional, I needed to lighten my skin to be beautiful, I needed to accept the bare minimum because I was lucky to even be in the room.
It wasn’t until my late 20s when I started to realize that I needed to “unlearn all that”.
While on my journey, I began having deep conversations with friends who had toxic things they had to unlearn as well. Which brought me to the idea of creating a podcast that explores and creates an open space to discuss these difficult topics.
Val, the founder of The Trident Network, reached out to see if I wanted to create a podcast. She provided a space and opportunity to make the dream of the podcast a reality.
What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?
Thanks to this podcast I have been able to verbally say things out loud to realize the rubbish beliefs I upheld as a standard. Normalizing beliefs that are not only wrong but hold us back from progressing as well-rounded people.
What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?
It has been really fun. I get a chance to talk to friends and share stories of peoples’ experiences. I love the chance to talk through things that have helped me heal and grow.
I hate editing. Shout out to all the editors out there. You all are doing the Lord’s work and it’s not easy.
If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?
I would recommend starting with the first episode about mistakes. You get a feel of the dynamic between Matt & Phylicia while they introduce the podcast.
Which other podcasts do you love listening to?
It truly depends on the mood but weekly I listen to a podcast called “Therapy for Black Girls” by Dr. Joy Harden Bradford. She talks about mental health and personal development.
We listen to other podcasts on the Trident Network; DCOMmentaries & The Tournament Podcast.
We also listen to:
- Crushes! With Deanna Ortiz
- The Hood Novel Book Club with Rachel Hall
- Scam Goddess
- How Did This Get Made
