Podcast Showcase: Woman Centered Health

Podcast

Welcome to the next in the Podcast Showcase series, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This time, we talk to Woman Centered Health.

Sum up your podcast in three sentences

At Woman Centered Health (WCH), we strive to improve communication between clinicians and patients about sexual and reproductive care providers by focusing on how to talk with women. We firmly believe that communication is the cornerstone to a successful care provider and client relationship. Our podcast is for clinicians who want to learn how to improve the way they communicate with their patients.

Who is your ideal listener? Who loves your show?

Our ideal listener is any clinician who works with women and minorities, especially those that provide sexual and reproductive health services. However we have a growing number of non-clinicians that have been listening, so we have started adding a question in our podcast that relates the topic to listeners who may not be clinicians.

What made you start this podcast?

We started this practice for two reasons. (1) There is a 7-year gap between when research is done to when it is implemented into clinical practice.  We feel like this was too long of a gap, so we created a free and accessible means to disseminate current research and clinical expertise faster.

(2) When we were working on our dissertations and in consideration of our field of interest (sexual and reproductive health) we found that so much of sexual and reproductive health outcomes are based on communication. For example, we don’t inherently/biologically know how to prevent pregnancy. So we wanted to focus on how to communicate about various sexual and reproductive health issues.

What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?

We have learned two things. (1) We had this idea that with providing woman-centered care or patient-centered care that care/communication would be tailored based on culture or other factors. However, woman-centered care is about leaving assumptions and biases outside of the room and communicating with the person in front of you.

(2) We have learned more about the historical underpinnings of sexual and reproductive healthcare and current grassroots movements to improve health, like reproductive justice.

What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?

Our experience has been a total learning curve.  When you get a PhD in nursing you don’t learn about social media, website design, coding, or anything related to podcasting.  We love the recording part (we love talking!) but don’t love editing and social media.

If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?

Tough question. Can’t pick just one, here are the top 3 that are critical to all of our episodes:

  1. EP 7: Grassroots Perspective of Reproductive Justice, Abortion, & Religion with Toni Bond Leonard,
  2. EP 2 Unconscious Bias with Dr. Wu and Dr. Saint-Hilaire, and
  3. EP 24: Sex Shame for Providers with Dr. Nikki Julian
