It was lovely for a while
I thought he had it in him
To do somersaults in the sky
And land with a jubilant whoosh
In a field of marshmallows pink and white
I believed he could race against the wind
And still come out first
Barely out of breath.
I thought he could take on the world.
And sit atop the globe.
With his legs dangling carelessly
And his hands behind his head
Whistle that happiest tune of all
That of a man well fed.
But Lady Luck was otherwise engaged
And when his cup was full, she let him down with the froth.
When his star was at its brightest, she ran out of glitter.
And when the words in his head just flowed
Lady Luck fled the seas in search of solid ground.
