Thanks to the tremendous box office success of Obsession and Backrooms, the horror industry is experiencing a golden age. August 2026 is shaping up to be a must-see month for any fan of the genre.
From sci-fi horror to psychological thrillers, supernatural mysteries, and zombie movies, the late-summer lineup is packed with major titles sure to send chills down our spines.
To start off the eighth month of the year, the red “N” giant brings us the claustrophobic sci-fi thriller The Last House, while at the same time, movie theaters welcome the visceral horror and gory nostalgia of Ice Cream Man.
As the weeks go by, the genre evolves toward much more complex, twisted, and abstract offerings. We’ll witness the spiritual realm reclaiming its place in the real world with Insidious: Out of the Further, only to then lose ourselves in the endless anguish of the liminal landscapes in It Ends.
Toward the end of the month, to cap off the lineup, we’ll delve into Ridley Scott’s post-apocalyptic desert hell in The Dog Stars and the frenetic action of the South Korean horror thriller Colony.

The Last House

This is the premise of The Last House, an intense sci-fi thriller and claustrophobic horror film directed by Louis Leterrier and starring Greta Lee and Wagner Moura. After becoming a resounding hit at the SXSW festival, this cosmic and liminal horror film, backed by the prestigious distributor Neon, stands out as one of the most unsettling cinematic surprises of the year by transforming youthful anxiety into a nightmare with no way out.
It’s fair to say that liminal spaces are having a major moment in recent cinema; that anxiety of racing toward nowhere seems to strike a chord in today’s culture. From this premise emerges It Ends, a disturbing story about four recent college graduates who set out on a late-night road trip as a final get-together before their lives go their separate ways.
However, after taking the wrong turn, they find themselves trapped in a seemingly endless landscape. No way out, no turning back, with a car that never runs out of gas and a strange absence of hunger. They have only one option left: they are simply forced to keep going.
The Dog Stars

Yeon Sang-ho, the mastermind behind Train to Busan (부산행), returns with an action-horror film titled Colony (군체). This time, survival depends not only on running, but on confronting a threat that evolves by the second.
The plot follows a biotechnology professor trapped in a smart skyscraper when a rapidly mutating virus breaks out during a conference. With the building hermetically sealed by authorities, the survivors must face not only infected individuals evolving into terrifying forms, but also the despair of a hopeless situation. Amid the chaos, the struggle for survival will reveal the worst of human nature as the protagonists desperately search for a way out in a setting with no escape.
Starring Jun Ji-hyun and Ji Chang-wook, Colony promises to be the most intense experience in Korean cinema this year, combining frenetic action with the rawest body horror.
