Dying for Sex
FX/Hulu | Season Premiere | Release date: Friday, April 4
Six years after playing Gwen Verdon on the small screen, Michelle Williams returns to television this spring.
Inspired by Molly Kochan’s story, which previously aired on the Wondery podcast of the same name, Dying For Sex explores one woman’s sexual odyssey following a cancer diagnosis.
According to the official synopsis:
“After Molly Kochan receives a diagnosis of Stage IV metastatic breast cancer, she decides to leave her husband to explore the complexity of her sexual desires for the first time in her life, with her best friend Nikki by her side.”
Dying For Sex, created and written by Kim Rosenstock and Elizabeth Meriwether, and starring Williams and Jenny Slate, will premiere Friday, April 4 on Hulu, with all eight episodes available simultaneously.
Your Friends and Neighbors
Apple TV | Season Premiere | Release date: Friday, April 11
Apple TV+’s upcoming drama series, Your Friends and Neighbors, will premiere on April 11 and has already received an early renewal.
Featuring a mix of crime and psychological suspense, the nine-episode first season of Your Friends and Neighbors, follows Andrew “Coop” Cooper (Jon Hamm), a hedge-fund manager whose once glamorous life has taken a nosedive.
Coop is still struggling with his recent divorce when, out of the blue, he is fired from his high-level job. Depressed, and utterly desperate, he resorts to burglarizing his neighbors’ homes in affluent Westmont Village, only to discover that the affairs hidden behind those moneyed facades might be more dangerous than he ever imagined.
Picture it: Jon Hamm, Olivia Munn and Amanda Peet in the wealthy New York suburbs, playing tennis, attending high-society events and lying about just about everything along the way.
The first two episodes will premiere on Friday, April 11. A new episode will be released each week, with the first season finale arriving on Friday, May 30.
The Last of Us
HBO | Season 2 | Release date: Sunday, 13 April
The Last of Us, HBO’s hit post-apocalyptic series, returns for its second season on Sunday 13 April. Showrunner Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) is teaming up again with Neil Druckmann, developer of the original game, for creative duties on the latest instalment.
During 2023, HBO aired the first season of The Last of Us, becoming a critical and commercial phenomenon almost immediately. Starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, The Last of Us takes place 20 years after modern society has been dramatically devastated by a strange parasitic fungus called Cordyceps.
In this terrifying thriller, Cordyceps has all but wiped out civilisation, transforming most people into bestial creatures that bite their prey to multiply.
In the first instalment of The Last of Us, Joel (Pascal) and young Ellie (Ramsey) form a father-daughter pair as they struggle to survive the new world. While at first glance it may seem like another “zombie” and “end times” story, the drama explores sensitive themes of survival, loss and grief, growth and hope. At the time, the HBO adaptation was the media giant’s second-highest-grossing premiere, behind only the Game of Thrones prequel, House of Dragons.
After the season finale, fans have been eagerly awaiting the return of the Emmy-winning series. The official synopsis from HBO is as follows:
“After five years of peace following the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie’s collective past catches up to them, drawing them into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.”
True to its tradition, the seven-episode season remains the story of people doing what they can to survive when hope for a better future pales. All indications are that Druckmann and Mazin will delve deeper into the ruined world in which millions of people have been brutally murdered.
Catherine O’Hara, Jeffrey Wright and Kaitlyn Dever are among the additions to the cast.
Sherlock & Daughter
The CW | Season Premiere | Release date: Wednesday, April 16
Continuing the trend of adapting Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s intrepid and enigmatic detective to TV series and movies, The CW’s Sherlock & Daughter puts a clever twist on the classic story.
The series stars acclaimed English actor David Thewlis, star of Fargo and Emmy nominee, as Holmes, while rising star Blu Hunt (The New Mutants) plays his offspring.
The eight-episode Sherlock & Daughter follows Holmes on a sinister case that seems to have beaten him. Unable to investigate without endangering his closest friends, the legendary detective is at a loss until he meets young Amelia Rojas (Hunt). For her part, Amelia may be hiding a heavy secret. After the mysterious murder of her mother, she searches for Holmes, believing he may be her father, whom she has not heard from in a long time.
Together, and with such different backgrounds, they put their skills to use to solve an international conspiracy and bring to light the truth about Rojas’ mother’s death, while confronting the detective’s greatest enemy, Professor Moriarty, who is implicated in the mystery.
On top of all this, they work to find definitive proof that Amelia is indeed Holmes’ daughter.
This period piece is directed by showrunner James Duff, while Brendan Foley was in charge of writing the adaptation. In the U.S., Sherlock & Daughter will air on The CW, while in the U.K. it will air on Discovery+.
Andor
Disney + | Season 2 | Release date: Tuesday, April 22
Fans have waited nearly three years for the return of Andor, one of the many new series within the Star Wars universe.
Andor, the prequel to the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story returns with a second and final installment. Admirers should know that the story has been crafted to fit the gap between the events of the first season and the Rogue One movie. Thus, we will witness the journey of Cassian Andor, who undergoes a huge evolution as a member of the galactic Rebellion.
The first season was so surprisingly thoughtful and downright thrilling that expectations are through the roof. Season two is set to be a worthy finale to the gripping story that technically marks the starting point of this massive franchise.
El Eternauta aka The Eternaut
Netflix | Season Premiere | Release date: Wednesday 30 April
The long-awaited adaptation of El Eternauta, the iconic Argentinian sci-fi comic book, will premiere on Netflix next Wednesday 30 April.
In February 2020, the streaming service announced that it would adapt the powerful graphic novel El Eternauta, by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López, into a six-episode series. This project has been developed by renowned director Bruno Stagnaro (Okupas), with the participation of Martín Mórtola Oesterheld, Oesterheld’s grandson, as creative consultant.
First published in 1957 in the Argentinean magazine Hora Cero Semanal, El Eternauta is a story of survival, popular resistance and humanity. Set in Buenos Aires, the narrative follows the comings and goings of the unlikely hero, Juan Salvo (Ricardo Darín), and a brave group of fighters as they confront an alien invasion. In this iconic comic, a radioactive snowstorm wipes out much of the population and the human resistance must fiercely persevere.
Perhaps new generations do not know the true dimension of Oesterheld’s work, but El Eternauta is one of the most important comics in Latin America and the world.
