Celda 211

Netflix | Limited Series  | Release date: Wednesday, February 5

Celda 211, also known as Prison Cell 211, is a gripping six-episode Mexican thriller that will premiere on Wednesday 5 February on Netflix. Set in Ciudad Juárez, the series tells the story of a human rights lawyer who gets caught up in a riot in a border prison and poses as an inmate in order to survive.

In the official description of Cell 211, Netflix states:

“A human rights lawyer’s routine day becomes a nightmare when he’s trapped in a border-town prison riot. To survive, he must pose as an inmate. Can he blend in, or will his own darkness turn him into a criminal as dangerous as those around him?”

This particularly incendiary premise makes it clear that the miniseries aims to shatter our nerves.

Based on the novel of the same name by Francisco Pérez Gandul and an incredible true story, this limited series combines intense action with psychological drama and delves into themes of survival, identity and morality in extreme circumstances.

Cell 211 stars Diego Calva Hernández, known for his roles in the medical drama series Midnight Family, the crime series Narcos: Mexico and the controversial historical series Babylon. The rest of the cast includes Noé Hernández (Pedro Páramo, La reina del Sur) and Gerardo Taracena (Apocalypto, El fuego de la venganza).

Sweet Magnolias

Netflix | Season 4 | Release date: Thursday, February 06

Get ready to pour the drinks! Our favorite group from Serenity, SC. is back for more margaritas, and this time they’re taking on the holidays.

Based on the popular series of novels published by best-selling author Sherryl Woods, who executive produces the series, Sweet Magnolias follows lifelong best friends Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) and Helen (Heather Headley) as they juggle their personal relationships and professional careers in the cozy town of Serenity, SC.

More than a year after Sweet Magnolias wrapped its third season, the Netflix drama returns with its highly anticipated fourth installment on Thursday, February 6.

Here’s an overview of the season from the streaming service:

Sweet Magnolias season 4 takes us from Halloween to Christmas, with surprising laughter, unexpected heartbreak and renewed resolve along the way. While negotiating the twists and turns of their romantic lives, Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen must also navigate the return of old foes, the loss of great loves, and the pain of transition from past dreams to present ones.”

The synopsis continues:

“As the men in their lives pursue their own dreams and the teenagers take uneasy steps toward adulthood, the Magnolias support each other with creative problem-solving, deep-hearted commitment, and — as always — weekly margaritas.”

Notably, the talented Sheryl J. Anderson returns as showrunner and executive producer of the ten-episode romance adaptation.

Invincible

Prime Video | Season 3 | Release date: Thursday, February 06

Good news, Invincible is coming back for a third season! The hit adult animated superhero series returns on February 6 and promises to be even bigger and more fast-paced.

If you haven’t caught up with Invincible yet, here’s a little recap. Based on Robert Kirkman’s comic of the same name, the fic tells the story of young Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), who inherits his father’s superpowers and sets out to become Earth’s greatest defender. However, Mark soon discovers that the job is more challenging than he could ever have imagined, and everything begins to go off the rails when his father’s dark legacy is revealed.

After the explosive Season 2 finale, it’s clear that Mark’s journey as a hero has only just begun. With Mark Grayson’s nemesis, Angstrom Levy, soundly defeated and Mark becoming increasingly aggressive and isolated, it stands to reason that the next season will have a much darker tone than the previous two.

While plot details have yet to be confirmed, the official trailer for the third season leaves us with many clues ranging from a civil war between established superheroes and new challengers, to returning villains, and even the significant redesign of Mark’s costume. On this, co-showrunner Simon Racioppa said: “You’ve got some new cast members, new stories. We go [to] some crazy places. But we pick up everything that we left hanging in season 2. All the emotional stories that you liked in season 1.”

The third season will have a three-episode premiere, with new weekly instalments running until 13 March 2025. Luckily for fans, in July 2024, the animated superhero series was also renewed for a fourth season.

Cobra Kai

Netflix | Season 6 | Release date: Thursday, February 13

It’s a stellar and bittersweet moment for all fans of the Cobra Kai show. And the fact is, the series will end in February 2025, before the theatrical release of Karate Kid Legends.

If you haven’t seen the series, you should know that in 2018 Sony Pictures TV partnered with YouTube Red to produce Cobra Kai, a sequel series to the hit The Karate Kid movies from the 1980s.

This story begins when Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) are reunited 30 years after the events of the original The Karate Kid movie. The underlying issue is that the old rivalry between the two begins to rekindle when they decide to open dojos for new students.

In the third part of the sixth and final season, senseis and students meet in Barcelona for the prestigious Sekai-Taikai tournament. Fans are eager to see how the story ends, knowing that it will pick up (more or less) with the upcoming film Karate Kid: Legends, starring Macchio alongside Jackie Chan.

The final five episodes of Cobra Kai premiere on Thursday 13 February on Netflix. The first two parts of the final season were released in July and November 2024, respectively.

Cobra Kai is one of the most anticipated series this month.

Win or Lose

Disney+ | Season Premiere | Release date: Wednesday, February 19

It looks like 2025 will be another big year for Pixar fans.

Not only is there a new feature film on the way, an intergalactic adventure, titled Elio, but they will also be introducing their first full-length animated series Win or Lose, a family comedy about a softball team going through high school.

In its official description of Win or Lose, Pixar states:

Win or Lose, Pixar Animation Studios’ first-ever original long-form animated series, follows the Pickles, a co-ed middle school softball team, in the week leading up to their championship game. Each episode offers a look inside the off-the-field life of a character-a player, their parent, the umpire-revealing their funny, emotional and always relatable point of view in a unique visual style.”

The eight-episode series is created, written and directed by Carrie Hobson and Michael Yates, who previously worked on Toy Story 4. Overall, Disney has described Win or Lose as ‘…a comedy about love, rivalry, and the challenges that we all face as we struggle to win at life.’

So far, all indications are that this family-friendly content is worthwhile.

Reacher

Amazon Prime Video | Season 3 | Release date: Thursday, February 20

Reacher fans, don’t worry: The big guy is back in action. Just over a year after the second season premiered, Reacher returns this February.

If you need a quick recap, this action crime series is based on the books by Lee Child and stars Alan Ritchson as Jack Reacher, a former U.S. Army operative who has decided to take justice into his own hands.

According to Amazon Prime Video, the third season is inspired by Lee Child’s seventh Reacher novel, Persuader. The 2003 book, sees the man of action go undercover in Boston “to rescue an informant held by a disturbing enemy from his past.”

That means more friends for Reacher, and more information about his mysterious past.

The third season will premiere with three episodes beginning February 20, 2025. The series is available on Amazon Prime Video, where the remaining five episodes will be streamed weekly. The platform has already renewed the program for a fourth season.

A Thousand Blows

Hulu | Season Premiere | Release date: Friday, February 21

Following the success of series such as Peaky Blinders and Taboo, Steven Knight returns with A Thousand Blows, a historical drama that explores the ruthless world of underground boxing in London’s East End in the 1880s. If there’s one thing we know when it comes to British drama, it’s that if Steven Knight is the mastermind behind the project, it’s well worth watching.

Set in the vibrant and violent world of post-industrial London, A Thousand Blows is based on real characters and real events. The series shines a light on the illegal boxing rings that existed in Victorian city centres, and follows best friends Hezekiah (Malachi Kirby) and Alec (Francis Loevehall) as they move from Jamaica to London’s East End and make their way to a new life.

The six-episode first season of A Thousand Blows will premiere on 21 February on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ internationally. The series is directed and executive produced by Tinge Krishnan and Nick Murphy, along with Ashley Walters and Coky Giedroyc.
