Las Muertas
Netflix | Season 1 | Release date: Wednesday, September 10
Jorge Ibargüengoitia’s renowned Mexican novel Las Muertas (The Dead Girls), about the rise and fall of the pimp sisters Serafina and Arcángela Baladro, is being adapted for the small screen for the first time.
Published in the 1970s, the novel is inspired by the true story of sisters María del Jesús and Delfina González Valenzuela, who ran an extensive network of women traffickers in the Mexican states of Guanajuato and Jalisco for more than two decades. Popularly known as “Las Poquianchis,” they are the serial killers with the most victims in Mexican history.
According to Netflix’s official statement, the tragicomedy bridges the gap between the vision of Ibargüengoitia, one of the most important figures in Latin American literature, and the dark humor of filmmaker Luis Estrada (La ley de Herodes/ La Dictadura Perfecta), who is taking the helm of a series for the first time.
Las Muertas, consisting of six episodes, is part of the #QueMéxicoSeVea initiative and stars Arcelia Ramírez, Paulina Gaitán, Alfonso Herrera, and Joaquín Cosío.
