2023 TV series finales: a guide to the best shows ending this year

Firefly Lane

This year will leave a void in many viewers’ livers, as some of the best TV series are ending in 2023. The feeling is bittersweet: on one hand, you probably want to see what the final season has to offer and, on the other, a long journey is over for you.

Although you knew it was coming, you can never be prepared enough to let go of these characters that you have loved, hated or who have made you laugh and cry. We leave you with a list of the best series that will not return in 2024, and will certainly top the awards season.

Succession

The Emmy winner is a favorite show for many, so the news of the ending of Succession came as a surprise to some fans who were expecting a few more seasons on HBO. However, showrunner Jesse Armstrong said this was the plan from the beginning, which kept the show from losing momentum in portraying the characters’ overweening ambition.

The ten episodes of the fourth season conveyed the viscerality of the Roy family’s power plays. None of the heirs to the media empire wanted to let go of control, meaning they continued to inject venom and scheme to win individual favors to become the successor to the patriarch, Logan Roy. This proved to be a worthy ending.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Another high-quality show that ended in 2023 is this Amazon Prime comedy created by Amy Sherman-Palladino. The final season was structured ahead of time making every detail feel specially thought out so that all the characters, including Midge’s, had coherence.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is one of the most critically and audience acclaimed series for its witty and snappy dialogue, visually appealing style and exceptional performances.

In the final season you can appreciate different stages of Midge: The female comedian struggling to succeed in her career and, a few decades later, the successful woman are still quite human and real.

Barry

Barry is another of HBO’s acclaimed series with a 2023 denouement. The news even took the executive vice president of comedy programming by surprise. Actor Bill Hader said the story ends naturally after four seasons; however, this didn’t make it any easier for the also creator of the series.

Although Hader didn’t want to say goodbye, he was able to see the best moment when some fans began to comment that Barry’s days seemed to be limited in order to continue with the same energy with which it began.

Firefly Lane

It only had two seasons on Netflix, but it will keep you close to your tissues as you finish watching the last few episodes. The series is based on the novel Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah and follows the life and friendship of Kate Mularkey and Tully Hart from childhood.

The heartwarming story explores the ups and downs of friendship and teaches that your soul mate doesn’t have to be your partner, they can also be your best friend who is willing to cross the world to be with you in your worst moments.

The Crown

Netflix is scheduled to air the sixth and final season of The Crown in 2023. Although at the beginning it had been planned for six seasons, the showrunners momentarily thought that the fifth season might be the perfect place to stop, however, they soon returned to the original idea to do justice to the complexity of the story.

The Crown is one of the series with a fairly high bar, with top quality production and excellent performances. Although it has received some criticism for the accuracy of the story, the creators have reminded that it is mostly fiction.

Servant

Servant, created by M. Night Shyamalan, is a psychological horror series, with a story that seems to capture some elements of The Omen: a couple, a baby who is not what he seems and a strange babysitter; however, it has a unique, peculiar, disturbing and catching twist.

It has been complimented for its originality, mysterious plot and tense atmosphere, where you can forget about conventional horror to appreciate a twisted story of psychological terror. The fourth and final season on Apple TV Plus left some confused, others wanting more and others disappointed. But this is common in a show of this style where it doesn’t follow a pattern, but instead plays with many surprises, in this case very scary ones.

Ted Lasso — Is this the end?

This Comedy series was created as a three-part story, so season three has that feeling of an ending, because the creators and actors told the story they wanted to tell and the story they hoped to tell. But during the premiere of the final season in 2023 there were still questions about the renewal or potential ending.

Many fans of Ted Lasso were hoping for a return of this authentic and heartwarming story—an Apple TV comedy that follows the life of a cheerful, good-natured American football coach who is hired to coach an English football team, despite having no knowledge in the field.

The team is clear that they will take a break no matter what, but the future seems unpredictable, it looks like if everyone agrees that the ending makes sense, including the audience, then they will not return.

Will The Handmaid’s Tale also have a finale this year?

There is still no date for the premiere of the final season of the Hulu series The Handmaid’s Tale. However, there are tentative dates for the last months of 2023, meaning it could end in 2024.

The interesting thing about this long-awaited end, of one of the best series of recent years, is that it will give way to The Testaments, the sequel also based on a book by Margaret Atwood. So, fans of these books are delighted at the continuation of the story from another perspective.
