After a ‘back-handed’ comment made by a senior member of staff at the work, Natalie was left not knowing how to respond. On reflection, she acknowledged that the comment had negative racial undertones.

It was in that moment, that Natalie decided she didn’t want black women to feel singled out in these moments and moreso open a space where guidance and suggestions can be offered amongst black people.

What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?

Our podcast has taught us that sometimes people need validation for their feelings and experiences. That prejudice and discrimination of black women in the workplace across sectors remains an issue to be addressed.

Most of all, we have learnt that there is so much power in the ability of a community to empower its members to strive for better for ourselves and societal institutions.

What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?

We worked on the podcast for almost a year before our first publication. We want our podcast to serve our community to the highest degree and so to be educating and empowering, we take much time and effort researching and including a range of guests relevant to the subject matter.

We have utilised both studio spaces and remote recording platforms and have found both relatively easy to use.

We love hearing from our listeners but it has taken development of our skillset to grow our audience via various social media platforms. It cannot go without saying that all the elements of podcasting that we love have taken much investment in time, planning, questioning and revising in order to get the desired outcome.

If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?

Start with Season 1, Episode 1 on micro-aggressions. This episode calls out so many incidents that will have you second guessing yourself and the reality of what has happened. Our ability to share, unpick and even laugh about the topic is quite simply an expression of pain and healing co-existing.

Also, Season 1, Episode 3 – White Women Tears is one of our most listened to episodes, and Season 3, Episode 7 – Deuces, I’m out! is about knowing when it’s time to move on.
