Jonathan Glazer’s idea is to show an intimate juxtaposition between the horrors of the extermination camp and the daily lives of the followers of the Nazi regime of World War II.

“The commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig, strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp” states the synopsis. The film suggests that Rudolf Höss and his family are representative of the millions of ordinary Germans who chatted over breakfast while their neighbors were massacred.
