Podcast Showcase: Gender Reveal

A genderqueer person looking at their phone

Welcome to the next in the Podcast Showcase series, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This time, we talk to Gender Reveal.

Sum up your podcast in three sentences

Gender Reveal is a podcast made by and about trans people. Each week, we speak with a trans guest about their work and their experiences with gender. We also analyze current events from a trans lens and answer listener questions about gender and identity.

Who is your ideal listener? Who loves your show?

Trans people 🙂

At the time, there were more than 400,000 podcasts (now there are more than 2 million!), and yet I couldn’t find a single podcast about gender and trans people that had even a moderate following. I sought to create a resource for trans people who couldn’t access robust IRL trans community (think rural / disabled / young / old / closeted trans people), as well as cis people looking to inform themselves in a respectful way.

What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?

Oh, wow! I’ve learned so much — everything from decolonial concepts of gender, to ways that people are creating gender-neutral language in other languages, to ways that larger bodies are gendered differently than smaller ones.

What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?

I love getting an excuse to chat with my friends, peers, crushes and role models about their work and personal experiences. I hate having to deal with poor-quality recordings and try to figure out how to run the magic combination of filters to fix them.

If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?

Many of my favorite episodes are from Season 6: Diamond Stylz, Kai Cheng Thom, Ari Robbins Greene, Tre’vell Anderson, Imara Jones, Torrey Peters, etc. Our recent episode with Kirby Conrod is also popular.

Which other podcasts do you love listening to?

Queersplaining, TransLash Podcast, Rude Tales of Magic, Who? Weekly, Flash Forward
