Podcast Showcase: No Shame In My Name

Juliana

Welcome to the next in the Podcast Showcase series, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This time, we talk to No Shame In My Name.

Sum up your podcast in three sentences

Wholesome. Human. Educational.

Who is your ideal listener? Who loves your show?

The #NSIMN Podcast is loved and listened to by those who have an interest in culture and language. It generally attracts those who are interested in learning something new, or those who want a platform to share their own stories around their names, languages and cultures.

What made you start this podcast?

I started this podcast as an overflow of some of the frustrations that I faced with my own name. Noticing the shared experiences of butchered names, when talking to friends, family and colleagues, I decided it would be cool to have a platform for celebrating the stories and meanings behind our names. And I’m grateful that it has grown to resonate with so many people.

What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?

Thanks to this podcast, I have learnt that learning can be fun. To some, including myself, coming across a new name, language or culture can seem daunting and scary. But there’s actually a space to learn new things, without so much pressure being attached.

And then, I’ve also learnt so many incredible new names and I’ve also learnt about the multiplicity of languages that are spoken in Nigeria alone.

What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?

I love the freedom in podcasting. It’s so exciting. There are so many possibilities. Through podcasting I’ve been introduced to so many incredible artists, storytellers, people. It’s great.

I really enjoy editing audio, despite the long hours. I’ve grown to really enjoy the interviewing process too. Trying to find ways to get our guests to open up is really interesting.

One thing I don’t like about podcasting is when bad Wi-fi interferes with good conversation!

If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?

This is such a tricky question. I will put out a disclaimer by saying that in every episode, you will learn something new. It depends on what you’re looking for really.

Starting from the beginning of things is never a bad idea. So the first episode, the trailer episode, gives a little insight into what you can expect.

Which other podcasts do you love listening to?

I have so many great podcasts that I love listening to. Just to name a few:

I love a range if I’m completely honest. And I’m super excited to discover more!
