Podcast Showcase: The Introvert Sisters

Headphones

Welcome to the next in the Podcast Showcase series, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This time, we talk to The Introvert Sisters.

Sum up your podcast in three sentences

The Introvert Sisters podcast is a twice-monthly show hosted and produced by Sharon Hurley Hall and Lisa Hurley, two INFJs with a lot to say. The show celebrates the amazingness of introverts and shares their relatable take on what it’s like to be two quiet girls in a noisy world. It is also a safe space where the sisters talk about broader issues that concern them as Black women.

Who is your ideal listener? Who loves your show?

We started The Introvert Sisters with the idea that we were talking to introverts, and that’s still our main audience. But we’ve realized that extroverts looking to understand the introverts in their lives also love the show. And we have another audience of anti-racists, Black and white, who enjoy our episodes on the Black experience.

This podcast has been a long time coming. Lisa and I (Sharon) had the idea a few years ago, but it ended up being a pandemic passion project. With both of us having more free time early in 2020, we finally had the time to get it launched.

I think as Black women introverts who are actually sisters we have something interesting to offer to the podcasting space.

What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?

The podcast has definitely made us dig into the nature of introversion more, We knew we were introverts, of course, but as part of our episode preparation, we’ve looked at issues like the difference between introversion and shyness, and why introverts react differently to certain scenarios. It’s been fascinating.

What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?

We really enjoy recording. One of our listeners commented that it was like being in our living room. We get on well and so we laugh a lot and have fun with the process.

We’ve learned that producing a podcast takes work. Lisa and I split the tasks – she does the outlines, show notes and social media. I take care of the audio, video and blog posting.

In Season 2, we started doing video, which is a stretch for introverts. But our subscribers love the videos, so we’re continuing to do them.

If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?

That depends. If you’re only interested in introversion, then Episode 34: Zoom Fatigue is Real: Why Introverts Find Video Calls Hard is a good choice, because I think it’s a topic everyone can relate to in these times.

If you’re more interested in anti-racism, then our most popular episode is Episode 16: Don’t be a Lazy Anti-Racist: Stop Performing Allyship and #Dothework. Again, I think it’s because it captured the mood of the time with the “new Civil Rights Movement” being on all our minds.

Which other podcasts do you love listening to?

There are a few on our list. Lisa also co-hosts the Tea on Tap Podcast, which is fun to listen to. We’re also just getting into a new podcast: Seawoman Chronicles: The Podcast.
