Ironheart

Disney + | Season Premiere | Release date: Tuesday, June 24

Get ready to enjoy Ironheart in her own TV show!

It’s been four years since the Ironheart miniseries was announced and three since audiences first met Riri Williams (Dominique Thorn) in the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022).

In case you need a brief primer to get you up to speed: Riri Williams debuted in the 2016 comic book Invincible Iron Man Vol. 2 #7, and has since then excelled in her duties as a heroine.

As fans may recall, in the 2022 film, Riri created her own Iron Man-like armour, which not only allowed her to demonstrate her intelligence, but also catapulted her into the superhero spotlight for good.

According to Marvel’s official synopsis:

“Set after the events of ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,’ Marvel Television’s ‘Ironheart’ pits technology against magic when Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne)-a young, genius inventor determined to make her mark on the world-returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins aka ‘The Hood.”

With only six episodes, Ironheart will complete Phase Five of the MCU. Anthony Ramos, Lyric Ross and Alden Ehrenreich also star, while others, including Sacha Baron Cohen, have undisclosed roles.

The Bear

Hulu/ Disney + | Season 4 | Release date: Wednesday, June 25

Chefs, get ready The Bear is coming back for a fourth season!

In case you haven’t seen season three, here’s a little recap: the instalment ended with a cliffhanger in which the future of The Bear hung in the balance. The denouement showed chef Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) engrossed in reading a review published in the Chicago Tribune, which could have dire repercussions for the restaurant’s finances.

Given that season three closes with an ominous “to be continued” screen, it’s safe to assume that the loose ends of this episode will be tied up and resolved in the next.

So it’s likely that Carmy will be up against it to keep the restaurant afloat in this new instalment. Uncle Jimmy is ready to cut off the restaurant’s funding if it doesn’t turn a profit soon, and Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) is still considering whether to stick it out or accept an offer to work in another restaurant.

“With new challenges around every corner, the team must adapt, adjust and overcome. This season, the pursuit of excellence isn’t just about getting better – it’s about deciding what’s worth holding on to,” said a synopsis for the upcoming season.

The entire main cast, Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, Abby Elliott and Matty Matheson are expected to return.

The Bear premieres on 25 June on Hulu (US) and 26 June on Disney (UK and elsewhere).

Squid Game

Netflix | Season 3 | Release date: Friday, June 27

Since the original instalment became an unprecedented global phenomenon in autumn 2021, viewers have been eagerly awaiting each batch of new episodes of Netflix’s dystopian drama Squid Game. Now, at long last, its third and final season is here, and we couldn’t be more excited!

In the second instalment, Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) was tricked by the sinister Front Man, who controls the lethal game and posed as an ally. Announcing the new season, the series’ writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk said, “the fierce clash between [Gi-hun and Front Man’s] two worlds will continue into the series finale.”

Finally, we get to see what happens to contestant 456, and whether he will actually manage to save his fellow players, and destroy the Squid Game once and for all.

As stated in the official press release:

“Season 3 explores the choices Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) will make amidst overwhelming despair. As the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) plots his next move, the surviving players find their decisions leading to increasingly dire consequences with each round of the deadly games.”

Squid Game is a sharp reflection on the social issues inherent in capitalism and class inequality, transcending the realm of mere violence. The latest season of the acclaimed Korean series promises to be the most shocking to date.
