Where the world thinks out loud

Podcast Showcase: KidNuz

Tweens

Welcome to the next in the Podcast Showcase series, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This time, we talk to KidNuz

Sum up your podcast in three sentences

KidNuz is a one-of-a-kind, daily current events podcast produced specifically for kids by four Emmy-winning broadcast journalists. It’s fun and fresh, nonpartisan, top of mind, and completely age-appropriate as it covers day-to-day news, politics, science, sports, and entertainment.

Our mission is to engage kids in current events, encourage critical thinking, and spark meaningful conversations.

Who is your ideal listener? Who loves your show?

Our ideal listener is any kid who wants to be in-the-know with what’s going on in the world, but our sweet spot is 8-13. We have more than 8 million downloads, are in thousands of schools and hundreds of countries. We are loved by kids, parents and teachers alike!

What made you start this podcast?

Stephanie Kelmar, one of our founders, got tired of turning over the daily paper to hide inappropriate headlines from her kids. She called me, who was equally tired of diving for the radio dial to silence frightening news reports, to say there was nothing in ‘this space.’

She was right — and we got to work.

What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?

The four of us are news junkies, so we love news and we love learning something new everyday, right along with our audience.

What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?

There’s nothing not to love about podcasting. It’s a growing medium and it’s fun to be riding its popularity wave.

If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?

Every episode is 100% fresh and timely, so they can start on any weekday that suits them without worrying that they’d need to ‘catch up.’ The only episodes that might be evergreens are on school holidays.

Which other podcasts do you love listening to?

I wish I had time to listen to others.
