From Other Mommy to Clayface: 6 new horror movies coming out this Halloween 2026

If 2026 has proven anything, it’s that the horror genre is in better shape than ever. From the unsettling scares of Obsession to the nightmare that is Backrooms and the blood-soaked chaos of Evil Dead Burn, the year’s biggest horror movies have kept fans on the edge of their seats.

Now, with the arrival of fall and Halloween, the major distributors have stepped up their offerings and scheduled an even wider range of options, including everything from horror featuring prehistoric creatures and psychological thrillers to claustrophobic suspense and body terror.

In the last quarter of the year, we’ll witness how a humanitarian mission turns into a brutal battle against a prehistoric predator in Beware Boiúna; we’ll delve into a dangerous game of obsession and dark family secrets in the erotic thriller Verity, and we’ll experience a child’s worst nightmare as a sinister doppelgänger takes over his home in the terrifying Other Mommy.

In addition, the lineup is rounded out by a claustrophobic survival story in Whalefall, and a post-apocalyptic home-invasion thriller in Hallowarrior. To top it all off, an electrifying reimagining of Clayface from the DC Universe awaits us.

Whether through monsters, biological threats, homes under siege, or the vastness of the deep ocean, movie theaters and digital screens will pull out all the stops to entertain audiences during the spookiest month of the year.

Beware Boiúna

Where to Watch: In Theaters

Release date: Friday, October 2

Genre: Survival Horror, Suspense / Thriller, Action

If you’re the kind of person who enjoys watching a group of people trapped in the middle of nowhere fighting an impossible monster, Beware Boiúna is for you. After causing a huge stir at its world premiere during Fantastic Fest, this Lionsgate production is the talk of the town for being a tense and brutally physical horror film.

This is the story of a group of young doctors who travel to the remote banks of the isolated Curuçá River, unaware that the real danger lies not in the hostile terrain, but in the awakening of a mythological predator. What begins as a noble humanitarian medical mission quickly turns into the worst of nightmares.

As the official synopsis warns:

“Deep in the Amazon, a medical mission spirals into a fight for survival when Boiúna, a colossal ancient predator, awakens to reclaim her domain. In the jungle where nature holds absolute power, she decides who lives and who dies.”

Thanks to the powerful performances by Kiana Madeira, Jessica Rothe, and Logan Marshall-Green, everything points to Beware Boiúna being the ultimate monster phenomenon to kick off this year’s Halloween season.

Verity

Where to Watch: In Theaters

Release date: Friday, October 2

Genre: Erotic thriller, Psychological horror, Mystery, Romantic drama

Colleen Hoover’s literary phenomenon, Verity, finally makes the leap to the big screen.

Directed by Michael Showalter, the plot follows Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson), a writer facing serious financial problems. Her situation changes when Jeremy Crawford (Josh Hartnett) hires her to write the final volumes of the best-selling book series by his wife, Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway), who was left incapacitated after a car accident.

However, when she moves into the Crawford family home to organize the work materials, Lowen’s assignment takes a sinister turn. There, the writer discovers a hidden autobiographical manuscript. The text contains detailed accounts of serious incidents and secrets from the family’s past. The discovery leaves Lowen unable to tell whether the pages are part of a work of fiction or a real confession about crimes committed by Verity.

Other Mommy

Where to Watch: In Theaters

Release date: Friday, October 9

Genre: Supernatural Horror, Psychological Horror, Family Drama, Thriller

Directed by Rob Savage, the film is an adaptation of the novel Incidents Around the House, written by Josh Malerman. The plot follows Bela, an eight-year-old girl living in a household plagued by marital problems.

Her world changes drastically when a sinister entity that looks exactly like her mother, Ursula, emerges from her closet. From that moment on, the girl is unable to tell the difference between her real mother and the creature that has invaded the house.

This feature film marks Jessica Chastain’s return to the horror genre, following her previous appearances in films such as Mama (2013), Crimson Peak (2015), and It: Chapter Two (2019). In this film, the actress takes on a dual role, portraying both the mother and the entity that torments her.

Whalefall

Where to Watch: In Theaters

Release date: Friday, October 16

Genre: Survival Thriller, Water Horror, Suspense, Drama

Directed by Brian Duffield, Whalefall is a feature film that redefines the concept of survival horror in natural settings. The film, starring Austin Abrams, uses a hostile marine setting to depict an extreme experience.

According to the official synopsis:

“The story follows Jay, a 17-year-old diver who dives off the coast of Monterrey to recover the remains of his late father. During the dive, the young man is swallowed alive by an 85-foot-long sperm whale. With an oxygen supply limited to one hour, Jay must devise an escape strategy from inside the animal’s gut while dealing with the lack of light and decompression.”

Unlike horror films centered on killers or ghosts, this film uses claustrophobia and thalassophobia (the fear of the deep ocean) to build tension. Without a doubt, it’s an ideal choice for physical and psychological suspense on the October movie lineup.

Hallowarrior

Where to Watch: Shudder

Release date: Friday, October 16

Genre: Post-apocalyptic horror, Home invasion thriller, Suspense

Directed by Ben Sottak, Hallowarrior is a post-apocalyptic horror and survival story. The film, starring Milly Shapiro, had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival and will be available to the general public via the Shudder streaming platform.

Four years after a plague wiped out nearly all of humanity from the face of the Earth, we meet Pumpkin. At 16, the young woman believes she is the only survivor on the planet and has become so obsessed with Halloween that she has built a shelter on an old New York farm, completely decorated for the occasion.

Conflict erupts on the eve of the celebration when the protagonist sends out a distress call over the radio that includes an invitation to join the festivities. Far from finding support, the signal draws a dangerous group of scavengers and a ruthless gang of attackers right to her doorstep.

Clayface

Where to Watch: In Theaters

Release date:  Friday, October 23

Genre: Body horror, Suspense, Thriller, Science fiction

The film adaptation of Clayface is shaping up to be a key project for DC fans, as it incorporates the character’s signature body horror under the direction of James Watkins and a screenplay by the prolific Mike Flanagan. To top it off, the involvement of James Gunn and Matt Reeves in the production ensures a standard aligned with the franchise’s reboot and new creative era.

The plot centers on Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries), an actor who suffers severe disfigurement after being attacked by a criminal. To regain his former appearance, the protagonist turns to an experimental chemical that grants him the ability to mold his own flesh as if it were clay.

However, exposure to this compound alters his biology and triggers severe side effects, transforming him into a monstrous entity. The result is a body horror thriller that marks the first entry of this genre in DC’s film catalog.
