The summer movie lineup is on fire with a wave of new releases where action, science fiction, and animation come together in a shared spirit of adventure. June promises to keep us on the edge of our seats with stories designed to challenge the imagination.
Epic adventure returns to the big screen with Masters of the Universe, an ambitious live-action film that brings back Mattel’s hero to defend Eternia. Meanwhile, space sci-fi expands with Supergirl, in which DC Studios presents an intense interstellar odyssey of revenge and justice.
Beyond the big blockbusters, this wave of adventures also offers room for deeper reflection. Family cinema takes us under the sea with The Last Whale Singer, one of the most anticipated eco-friendly gems of 2026 exploring identity and marine conservation.
Dark fantasy comes to life in Soy Frankelda (I Am Frankelda), the acclaimed Mexican stop-motion film arriving on Netflix under the guidance of Guillermo del Toro.
Finally, as the grand finale, the return of Woody and Buzz in Toy Story 5 promises to cement its status as the animated adventure phenomenon of the decade. Here are the five titles that will dominate the box office this month.
The Last Whale Singer
Where to Watch: In Theaters
Release date: Friday, June 5
Genre: Animation, Adventure, Fantasy, Coming-of-Age, Family Film
Following its successful run at international film festivals in 2025, where it had its world premiere and won awards such as the Club of Festivals Award at the Schlingel Festival, The Last Whale Singer is set to hit theaters on June 5.
Directed by Reza Memari, the story follows Vincent, a teenage humpback whale calf consumed by the loss of his parents and the immense pressure of inheriting his father’s role as protector of the ocean.
The true core of the plot unfolds when the Leviathan, an ancient monster that poisons marine life with deadly ink, breaks free from an iceberg and threatens to destroy everything. To stop this catastrophe, the young cetacean must embark on a dangerous journey into the depths, heal his grief, and discover his own mystical song to save the global ecosystem.
Through a naturalistic and thought-provoking journey, the film explores the vital role these majestic cetaceans play within their underwater tribes.
This ambitious international co-production stands out as the first animated feature film developed entirely with the Unreal Engine 5, offering an unprecedented photorealistic visual experience.
Masters of the Universe
Where to Watch: In Theaters
Release date: Friday, June 5
Genre: Adventure, Superheroes, Heroic Fantasy, Action
By the power of Grayskull! The muscular hero who debuted as a Mattel action figure in 1982 is back. More than 40 years later, the iconic franchise is set to conquer theaters with an ambitious live-action production.
For those feeling nostalgic, it’s worth remembering that the craze for this universe began with the legendary 1983 animated series, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, which inspired the first live-action film in 1987. Both stories shared the classic sword-and-sorcery premise: the adventures of Prince Adam of Eternia and his allies defending the planet from his eternal nemesis, the malevolent Skeletor.
This new film reimagines the original material with an intriguing twist: the story begins with Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) trapped in an ordinary human existence on Earth.
The official synopsis hints at the epic tone of his journey:
“After being separated for 15 years, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam back to Eternia where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto). To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan/Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), and embrace his true destiny as He-Man—the most powerful man in the universe.”
With a reimagined mythology, a star-studded cast, and a spectacular display of visual effects, this installment promises to prove that the legacy of Eternia is more alive and powerful than ever.
Soy Frankelda (I Am Frankelda)
Where to Watch: Netflix
Release date: Friday, June 12
Genre: Dark Fantasy, Adventure, Family Drama, Animation (Stop-motion), Musical
On June 12, Netflix will be in the spotlight with the premiere of Soy Frankelda, the acclaimed gothic adventure film directed by the talented brothers Roy and Arturo Ambriz.
Backed by legendary filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, this feature film from Cinema Fantasma studio makes history by formally establishing itself as Mexico’s first film production created entirely using the complex stop-motion technique.
The official synopsis plunges us into an immersive odyssey where imagination is the primary weapon:
“In 19th-century Mexico, Frankelda is a gifted writer whose dark tales are ignored and dismissed. Forced to suppress her voice, she refuses to give up, even as many try to silence her. But when she is thrust into her subconscious, the very monsters she created come to life. Guided by Herneval, a tormented prince trapped between dreams and nightmares, she must restore balance between fiction and reality before both realms collapse. Meanwhile, the sinister writer Procustes and his conspirators plot to seize control. As Frankelda and Herneval grow closer, their bond becomes both a strength and a curse. To rewrite their fate, she must confront a love that defies existence and reclaim her power as a storyteller—before dark forces consume her imagination and reveal horrors beyond her creation.”
This film does much more than simply expand the universe of Los Sustos de Frankelda (Frankelda’s Book of Spooks), the acclaimed Max original series. By masterfully blending three pillars—impressive artistic engineering, Gothic folklore, and an emotional coming-of-age journey—the film not only redefines local technical standards but also firmly establishes Latin American animation on the international stage.
Toy Story 5
Where to Watch: In Theaters
Release date: Friday, June 19
Genre: Animation, Adventure, Fantasy, Comedy, Coming-of-Age
Following the success of the fourth installment of Toy Story — which earned a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and proved that Woody and Buzz still had stories to tell — Pixar Animation Studios is bringing back its most iconic franchise.
Directed by veteran filmmaker Andrew Stanton and co-directed by Kenna Harris, this fifth installment will once again feature the original voice cast of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, and Tony Hale. The plot picks up after the emotional ending of the previous film, in which Woody said goodbye to his friends to live as a “lost toy” alongside Bo Peep.
However, this new sequel sets up a necessary reunion to face the most powerful “enemy” to date: technology. The conflict in this installment doesn’t stem from a new toy, but from children’s growing fascination with tablets and electronic devices. With Jessie taking on a leading role, Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang must find a way to win back their owners’ attention in a world that seems to have forgotten the value of traditional toys. Thus, this fifth installment promises to balance classic nostalgia with an insightful reflection on contemporary childhood.
Supergirl
Where to Watch: In Theaters
Release Date: Friday, June 26, 2026
Genre: Superheroes, Adventure, Space Western, Action
Supergirl is set to storm the summer box office and expand DC Studios’ new cinematic universe. Following the release of Superman, the studio is revving up for its next major space-themed production, directed by Craig Gillespie (Cruella).
Milly Alcock takes on the role of the irreverent superheroine in a faithful adaptation inspired by Tom King’s acclaimed comic book series, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
According to the official synopsis, the plot will immerse us in a cosmic odyssey:
“Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl, joins forces with an unlikely partner on an interstellar journey of vengeance and justice when an unexpected adversary strikes too close to home.”
This feature film marks the character’s triumphant return as the undisputed star of the big screen for the first time since 1984, when Helen Slater donned the cape. While audiences have recently enjoyed alternative iterations such as Sasha Calle’s in The Flash, this gritty space adventure promises to completely redefine the heroine’s cinematic trajectory.
Alongside Alcock, the star-studded cast includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, Wil Coban, Ferdinand Kingsley, and the highly anticipated appearance of David Corenswet as the Man of Steel.
