Podcast Showcase: Pop Culture Planet

Headphones

Welcome to the next in the Podcast Showcase series, where we share podcasts with you in the words of the podcasters themselves. This time, we talk to Pop Culture Planet

Sum up your podcast in three sentences

At Pop Culture Planet, we cover the world of entertainment while also shining a light on representation and inclusion. We focus on having meaningful and analytical pop culture discussions and interviews with diverse voices in the entertainment space.

What made you start this podcast?

Podcast Showcase: Pop Culture Planet

Pop Culture Planet was inspired by the lack of diversity I was seeing within the entertainment space as both a woman and Latina.

I wanted to find a way to bring other people together from underrepresented groups that are not always given the mic to share their voices and thoughts.

What have you learned about your subject thanks to this podcast?

Not only have I learned so much about the fight for more inclusion both on screen and behind the scenes through my podcast, but I’ve also felt more empowered.

The way we’re portrayed on screen gives others permission to treat us in stereotypical ways and affects how we feel about ourselves.

That is why it’s so important to tell our own authentic stories. It’s fascinating to hear so many different opinions on what isn’t working, what is, and what we can all do better to make the projects we see on screen reflect our real world.

When representation is done right, it can change lives and inspire so many people.

What has your experience of podcasting been? What do you love / hate about the process?

I’ve had a blast learning more about the world of podcasting. I had a background in radio and had done some podcasting back in college, but it’s been a lot of fun figuring out how to bring my own project to life.

I love getting a chance to sit down with someone and just have a real conversation. It’s super enlightening and empowering to hear about the experiences of some of my favorite creatives in film and television.

I would say the hardest part is booking guests because you really need to sell yourself or make sure you’re reaching out when someone is promoting a project.

The edit can be challenging as well, but it is really rewarding to figure out the best way to package my work in order to get more ears (and eyes) on it as Pop Culture Planet has both audio and video formats.

If someone wants to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?

For someone who wants to start listening to my podcast, I would recommend my conversation with Harvey Guillén of What We Do In The Shadows. He talks about being “round, Brown, and proud” and the hustle that his Latino mom instilled in him from a very young age to pursue his dreams in his own way.

He’s also just so funny and charismatic that you get pulled into everything he’s saying.

Which other podcasts do you love listening to?

One of my favorite podcasts has to be Diva Dailies hosted by my friend Steffi. She expertly deconstructs everyone’s favorite divas of film, TV, and music in a fun and insightful way. I’ve gotten to join her on a few episodes and was mind blown by how analytical we could get about movies like Spice World and Bring It On.
